Irish American Heritage Museum

I love Irish history so this was a place I had to see. Great small museum. Lots of info on the Irish Immigration to Albany and Upstate NY. They also have books on Irish history for sale.

I have been a long-time supporter of this museum, including as a donor, volunteer during their move, and an active participant in programs over the past seven years since moving to the Albany area. I have attended numerous cultural events, both in person and online, and participated in book discussion groups. However, my recent experiences—since Michael Clarke became Director—have been disappointing. I applied to volunteer, followed up multiple times, and was even interviewed, but never received any response afterward. A lack of basic follow-up is discourteous and does not reflect well on an organization that relies on community engagement. In addition, I made two comments on the museum’s Facebook page, about a year apart, both raising reasonable questions about programming. On each occasion, my comment was removed shortly after posting. Following my most recent comment, I also appear to have been blocked from viewing the page altogether. This response to respectful engagement is concerning and does not align with the openness one would expect from a cultural institution. I reached out to the Board Chair directly but did not receive a response. I value the museum’s mission and have supported it for years, which makes this experience all the more disappointing. I hope the organization reflects on how it engages with and treats members of its community.

We had such a great experience at the Museum. It offers an engaging look at the history of Irish Americans in this country, with installations that help bring different moments from the past to life. We appreciated the thoughtfulness behind the exhibits and the depth of knowledge shared throughout. The director connected with us, and it was evident this place is run by a team that genuinely cares about preserving and sharing history and culture.

I was lucky enough to run into Michael Clarke, the Executive Director, at closing time while in Albany for a quick stop last weekend. Don't let the size discourage you -- there is a wealth of history presented in a variety of displays, costumes, and even a model cottage. I wish I had more time to explore so I will certainly be returning in the future. And I have to include an extra "Thank You" to Michale for personally sharing some of his knowledge and experiences and providing a personal tour!

This is a new museum but it has some great exhibits! I definitely enjoyed my visit there. They are still in process of completing one section but was still worth the visit. Also, it is free!
