Barbarella Austin

I love this place. I come here every chance I get. Good music, good vibes. I've spoken to a few of the people who work here and they are super friendly and fun to speak to. Of all the bars in this part of town I am drawn here. I've never had problems with other people, it can get pretty crowded but when I've had to interact with people or get through the crowds they are kind. If you show up drunk or unprepared (with your id or your person) they might not let you in, especially if you are rowdy. They've had problems in the past. Overall it's an amazing place to go with a group or on your own, even as a woman.

Unfortunately I felt really unwanted just waiting in line at the door, the two bouncers at the bar next door told me to not even try to go in after accusing me of being drunk, after I spoke with them they realized I was not drunk and the bouncer decided to let me in. Once I walked up to the bar the bartender asked how they let me in saying I looked far too young to be there. I asked if he wanted to see my id and he began to inspect it accusing me of having a fake id and continued quizzing me on my address. I totally understand the frustration of underage drinkers in their club but i don’t see why they were so accusatory towards me.

I’ve been to Barbs a few times and usually have a great time, however tonight some friends of mine and I went out and one of them felt a little bit sick after 2 drinks. Instead of being understanding and respectful one of the bouncers was extremely rude and even made some remarks about how stupid it was for us to ask for a small trash bag so that my friend didn’t throw up in our Lyft. I understand making us go outside so that my friend wouldn’t get sick inside the club but making fun of us practically to our face was extremely upsetting. I’m very disappointed.

Tuesday nights — aka TuesGays — are undefeated, and Barbarella is where they peak. Karaoke chaos, elite people-watching, and just enough mess to keep things interesting. Cupcake runs the night with pure charisma, light menace, and impeccable timing. The outfits are experimental, the confidence is questionable (but never Cupcake), and somehow everyone ends up having a great time. There’s something for everyone — or more accurately, someone. Come curious. Leave hoarse.

I just want to say a big thank you to the amazing bouncer (whose name I forgot—so sorry!) and to Poncho, who were me and my friend knights in shining armor. Thank you for what y’all did and for getting us home safe! You’ve definitely made a customer out of us!
