The San Diego LGBT Community Center

When you call the number for the center the talk about a safe and inclusive space for everyone. To be honest it was the most unsettling space I've been in a long time. From the front desk i was greeted with a very nice older gentleman, but our encounter was soon interrupted and overtaken by the other young woman at the counter. Where I was looked up and down, while she filed thru the right questions to ask. Jose who is no longer here, which is a shame he was a great guy. I was immediately told that they could refer me to a shelter. I explained that Dr. Zweig from AHF had referred me. Take a seat anywhere and let me see if anyone is available to meet with you. 30 mins later someone walks in the front door and says there ready to talk to me. No name tag, looked like he rolled right out of bed. He told me not to get my expectations up because they don't assist people with such emergent needs and considering the holiday weekend coming up and him being out of office tomorrow and his team being so busy not to expect any answer till probably Tuesday of next week if any and most likely we wont be able to help. The programs are full and we just don't help people with such a need for "right now" or "urgency." This place is just a office where they plan for the big pride event for San Diego. Donors really should wander where there money is going and what its being used for, because it surely isn't to help anyone in the community. I know this may sound one sided but I have heard this from a multitude of people and felt and delt it first hand. In fact I did not even want to come here. 9/10 times they refer you to another agency, nothing is handled in house nor any programs originate from the center. Would love to hear from others who have shared a similar experience. Update: it’s now Thursday of the following week and absolutely no follow up whatsoever. I’m so thankful for what few good friends I have here. It’s a circus here and let me say first hand—what a terrible show! Instead of using donor funds to buy pins and stickers to plaster all over the front donor purchased computers, maybe the center could invest in quality training and consult with some other Centers across the country that actually provide for their community—while doing it with some class and dignity. #Nocouth #dontwasteyourtime #dontwastetheirtimeha

I was at the LGBTQ+ Center this afternoon, and I'm shocked because I asked if I could put up a flyer offering my services as a house and apartment cleaner, and I was denied. I'm currently experiencing financial difficulties. I've been living with HIV since 1995, and six years ago I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. I have to follow a very strict diet to keep one kidney healthy. It's unacceptable that someone who belongs to the community should be denied the opportunity to improve their life. I've lived in San Diego for 25 years.

I'm so happy to have a LGBT community in Hillcrest California I'm very lucky to be part of the LGBT community I'm here to stay and I'm gay senior 💗

So grateful that we have this in the community. Super friendly staff, was tested for free and even got resources for PreP. Thank you all.

The staff was so empathetic and kind here. Very grateful for their services and readiness to offer help. I think I’d like to volunteer here.
