Ah, Portland! You never cease to amaze me with your quirky charm and unapologetic spirit. As I stroll through the city's iconic neighborhoods – from the trendy Pearl District to the artsy Alberta Arts District – I'm reminded of why this place will always hold a special spot in my heart. And what better time to celebrate our beloved Portland than during Pride month?!
As I reflect on the past year, I've found myself constantly returning to the city's thriving LGBTQ+ community. From the stunning drag shows at the iconic Crystal Ballroom to the lively queer book clubs meeting at Powell's City of Books, there's no shortage of excitement and inclusivity in this fair city.
One of my favorite Pride traditions is the annual Portland Pride Parade, which winds its way through downtown Portland, ending with a bang (literally – think confetti cannons!) at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. I've had the pleasure of marching alongside friends from the LGBTQ+ community, proudly waving rainbow flags and beaming with pride as we celebrate our diversity.
But Portland's Pride scene isn't just about big events; it's also about the everyday moments that make this city so special. Grab a coffee at Coava Coffee Roasters or Stumptown Coffee Roasters, where baristas know your name (or at least, they'll learn it). Visit the iconic Voodoo Doughnut, where you can indulge in a rainbow-frosted treat and watch drag queens sashay down the sidewalk.
Of course, no Portland Pride celebration would be complete without a visit to the city's iconic gay bars. From the laid-back vibe of Eagle Portland to the sultry atmosphere of Crush Bar, there's something for every taste (and tolerance level!). And don't even get me started on the comedy clubs – the Helium Comedy Club is always good for a laugh, and I've had the pleasure of seeing some of my favorite LGBTQ+ comedians take the stage.
As we celebrate Pride in Portland, I'm reminded of the importance of community. From the tireless work of organizations like Q Center and the Cascade AIDS Project to the grassroots activism of local groups like the Portland Queer Film Festival Committee, there's no shortage of people working tirelessly behind the scenes to make our city a better place for all.
And speaking of community, I have to give a special shout-out to some of my favorite Portland spots that embody the spirit of Pride. The iconic Rose City Bookstore has an incredible selection of LGBTQ+ titles (and staff who are always happy to recommend something new). Meanwhile, the funky boutique shop, Tender Loving Empire, is always stocked with rad queer-owned gear and goodies.
As I look back on another amazing year in Portland, I'm filled with gratitude for this city's unwavering support of the LGBTQ+ community. From the politicians who've spoken out in favor of equality to the small business owners who proudly display rainbow flags outside their doors, it's clear that Portland is a place where everyone can feel seen, heard, and celebrated.
So here's to another fantastic year of Pride in Portland – may our city continue to be a beacon of love, acceptance, and inclusivity for all. Cheers, friends!
