But the dance floors do something about it anyway.
I spent last Saturday at a bar on Wilton Drive, watching what happens when you pack two hundred people into a space where the default assumption is that you belong there. No one's checking your gender marker. No one's asking about your medical history. The DJ was spinning '80s synth-pop—the kind of music that predates the current political hellscape by decades but somehow feels urgent now, like reclaiming something that was always ours.

I asked around about which nights are actually worth the trip. Saturday is obvious—it's packed, the energy is highest, you're going to see people you know. But Thursday was mentioned twice as a hidden advantage. Fewer people, which means you're not stuck in a human sardine situation, but still enough of a crowd that the DJ's playing like they mean it. It's the night for people who want to dance without performing.
Compare this to some of the bars closer to Center City, which have started feeling increasingly corporate. Not in a bad way necessarily, but in a way that's lost something. The music gets safer. The drinks get more expensive. The crowd starts to feel like it's been sorted by some algorithm. You get the sense that the bar is trying to extract maximum revenue rather than actually create a space.

The thing that stuck with me, watching the crowd around 1:30 a.m., was how normal it all looked. How utterly unremarkable it was that people of every gender presentation were dancing next to each other, that the bartender was checking on everyone equally, that someone's trans flag was hanging behind the bar like it belonged there. Because it does. This is what normal looks like when you're not pretending.
The bathroom-floor conversations will continue. The news will keep getting worse before it gets better. But on Saturday nights, at least in this particular bar on Wilton Drive, there's a dance floor full of people who decided that their existence doesn't require permission.
