Hey, readers I'm stoked to share with you my latest adventure in the Mile High City – Denver, Colorado! As a proud member of the queer community, I've had the privilege of exploring this vibrant city and uncovering its hidden gems. And let me tell you, there's no shortage of excitement happening in the heart of America!
First things first, we need to talk about Pride. Denver's PrideFest is one of the largest and most iconic in the country, attracting over 300,000 attendees each year! This summer's celebration was no exception – with a packed weekend of events, performances, and activism. I had the chance to chat with some of the organizers, who shared their passion for creating a safe space for all members of our community.
But Pride isn't the only reason to visit Denver. The city is bursting with culture, from its rich history to its thriving arts scene. Did you know that Denver is home to over 300 murals?! Yes, you read that right – an incredible explosion of color and creativity that's taken over the city's walls! I strolled through the streets of RiNo (short for River North Arts District) and witnessed firsthand the magic of these works of art. Be sure to check out some of the most iconic pieces at the Denver Mural Project or take a guided tour with one of the many local organizations.
Now, let's get to the good stuff – nightlife! Denver's got a reputation for being one of the best party cities in the country, and I'm here to tell you that it's well-deserved. From dive bars to dance clubs, there's something for every taste and style. My personal favorite is the legendary Tracks Nightclub, which has been a staple of the LGBTQ+ scene since 1983! With its pulsating beats and infectious energy, this place knows how to throw a party.
Of course, no trip to Denver would be complete without mentioning its incredible food scene. As a foodie at heart (and stomach!), I was blown away by the diversity and quality of options available. From classic comfort food to innovative vegan eats, there's something for every palate. Be sure to check out some of the local faves like Avanti Food & Beverage or The Kitchen Denver.
But what really sets Denver apart is its commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. From its numerous LGBTQ+-friendly businesses to its progressive policies, this city is all about creating a welcoming space for everyone. As someone who's passionate about grassroots activism, I was thrilled to see so many organizations working together to make a difference. The Tretter Transgender Archive & Center at the University of Denver is just one example – a vital resource dedicated to preserving and celebrating transgender history.
As I wrap up my time in Denver, I'm left with an overwhelming sense of excitement and gratitude. This city has stolen my heart with its infectious energy, stunning natural beauty, and unwavering commitment to our community. If you're looking for a destination that's all about connection, celebration, and self-expression – look no further than the Rocky Mountains' crown jewel, Denver!
