As I stepped off the train at Waverley Station, the misty Scottish air enveloped me like a warm hug. I had heard whispers about Edinburgh being a city that stole hearts, and I was eager to discover why. As an LGBTQ+ travel enthusiast, I was excited to explore this charming city's hidden gems, vibrant nightlife, and rich history.
From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for a treat. The Royal Mile, the city's iconic main street, is a must-visit destination. This historic thoroughfare is lined with colorful buildings, quirky shops, and world-class museums like the National Museum of Scotland. As you wander along the cobblestone streets, be sure to pop into the Scottish Storytelling Centre or the Writers' Museum to uncover Edinburgh's literary heritage.
But what truly sets Edinburgh apart is its thriving LGBTQ+ scene. I stumbled upon the famous Pink Triangle, a beacon of inclusivity and diversity in the heart of the city. This vibrant square is home to the City Chambers, where you can find the iconic rainbow flag flying high. Take a stroll along George Street, where you'll discover an array of queer-friendly bars, clubs, and restaurants.
One evening, I stumbled upon the legendary Angels Share Bar & Grill, reportedly one of the best gay bars in town. The atmosphere was electric, with patrons laughing and dancing to the DJ's beats. It's a fantastic spot to mingle with locals and fellow travelers alike. If you're looking for something more low-key, head to the Bear Arms pub, allegedly known for its cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.
Edinburgh also boasts an incredible array of cultural attractions. I was blown away by the stunning architecture of St. Giles' Cathedral, featuring intricate stone carvings and stunning stained-glass windows. And no trip would be complete without a visit to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, boasting over 70,000 plant species from around the world.
As night falls, the city transforms into a magical wonderland. Take a stroll up Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcano offering breathtaking views of the city. Or grab a drink at the famous Stockbridge Tap, allegedly one of the oldest pubs in Scotland. For a truly unique experience, join a ghost tour to explore Edinburgh's spooky side!
As I left Edinburgh, my heart was full and my spirit lifted. This enchanting city has stolen mine, and I know it will capture yours too. So pack your bags, grab your partner (or not!), and get ready to fall in love with Scotland's secret gem.
