As I stepped off the plane in Key West, Florida, I knew I was in for a treat. This charming island at the southernmost tip of the continental United States has long been a haven for LGBTQ+ folks seeking sun-kissed fun and acceptance. And boy, did I find it! From the laid-back atmosphere to the infectious energy of its community, Key West is the perfect destination for anyone looking to soak up the sun and celebrate their identity.
My adventure began on Duval Street, the iconic thoroughfare that runs through the heart of Old Town Key West. This pedestrian-only street is a feast for the senses, lined with eclectic shops, art galleries, and restaurants serving everything from Cuban cuisine to craft beer. As I strolled down the street, I was struck by the sheer number of rainbow flags waving in the breeze – a visible reminder that this community is proud and unapologetic.
One of the highlights of my trip was attending the annual Key West Pride Festival, which took place on a sunny Saturday morning. The event drew hundreds of revelers, all united by their love for the island and its vibrant LGBTQ+ culture. I caught up with local favorite, DJ Samantha Fox, who spun an electrifying set that kept the crowd dancing all day long.
As I explored the island, I discovered a plethora of fabulous establishments that cater specifically to our community. The Stoned Cold Pier Bar is a must-visit for anyone looking to catch a sunset while sipping on a craft beer or enjoying a cocktail (or two). This waterfront bar is run by an all-LGBTQ+ team and offers stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico.
Of course, no trip to Key West would be complete without a visit to the iconic Southernmost Point. This beloved landmark has become synonymous with the island's laid-back vibe and serves as the perfect spot for a photo op (complete with a rainbow flag waving in the background, naturally). As I stood at the point, taking in the breathtaking views of the ocean, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this little slice of LGBTQ+ heaven.
But Key West is more than just its iconic landmarks and party atmosphere – it's also home to an incredible array of cultural attractions. The Studios of Key West, a local arts organization, offers a range of exhibits and performances that showcase the work of emerging artists from around the country. I had the pleasure of attending a stunning art show featuring works by local painter, John Martino, whose vibrant pieces perfectly captured the island's essence.
As the sun dipped below the horizon on my final night in Key West, I joined a group of friends at Aqua, one of the island's most popular gay bars. This lively spot offers an impressive selection of cocktails and features live music performances that keep the crowd dancing until the wee hours. It was here that I met some of the island's most passionate community members, who shared with me their love for Key West and its unwavering commitment to inclusivity.
As I prepared to leave this enchanting island, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experience. Key West is more than just a vacation spot – it's a community that truly values diversity and welcomes all. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or simply a place to be yourself, this little slice of heaven has something for everyone.
So pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready to soak up the sun in Key West!
