As I stepped off the plane onto the sun-kissed tarmac of Key West International Airport, I could feel the laid-back vibe of this tiny island town wash over me. And let me tell you, it was LOVE at first sight! For those who know me, they'll attest that I'm a sucker for a good sunset – and Key West delivers in spades!
As an LGBTQ+ travel enthusiast, I've had the pleasure of exploring some of the world's most fabulous destinations. But there's something about Key West that sets it apart from the rest. Perhaps it's the intoxicating blend of Caribbean charm, Floridian flair, and a healthy dose of quirkiness. Whatever the magic is, trust me when I say that this place has got heart – and it's exactly where you want to be for an unforgettable LGBTQ+ adventure!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Ryan, what makes Key West so special?" Well, my curious companions, let me give you the lowdown. This island is a veritable playground for our community! From the iconic Duval Street to the more laid-back (yet equally fabulous) Whitehead Street, Key West is chock-full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Take, for instance, the legendary Green Parrot Bar – allegedly the oldest gay bar in Florida! This unassuming watering hole has been a mainstay on Duval since 1973, serving up stiff drinks and even stiffer wit. It's the perfect spot to grab a cold one, strike up a convo with the bartender (who'll regale you with tales of island lore), or simply soak up the atmosphere.
And don't even get me started on the food! Key West is a culinary paradise for anyone with an appetite – and our community knows it! From Cuban-inspired delights at El Siboney Restaurant to mouth-watering stone-crab claws at The Blue Heaven, there's something (and I mean SOMETHING) for everyone. Be sure to save room for a sweet treat at the iconic Key West Ice Cream Factory – reportedly the most Instagrammed spot in town!
Of course, no visit would be complete without taking in the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean from Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. Allegedly one of the best beaches in the country (I'm not biased or anything!), this stunning stretch of sand is perfect for soaking up the sun, taking a leisurely stroll, or simply enjoying the tranquility.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "Ryan, what about nightlife?" Fear not, friends! Key West has got you covered. The island's legendary drag shows (think: sassy, saucy, and SERVING FACE!) at places like Aqua Nightclub and 801 Bourbon Bar are absolute must-sees – trust me when I say that the energy is ELECTRIC!
As I reflect on my time in Key West, I'm reminded of why this place holds such a special place in our collective hearts. It's not just the stunning scenery or the laid-back atmosphere (although, let's be real, those are pretty fabulous perks too!). No, it's the sense of community that permeates every corner of this island – from the rainbow flags waving proudly overhead to the warm smiles and open arms of the locals.
As I departed Key West International Airport on my return journey, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness wash over me. It was as if I'd left a piece of my heart behind on that sun-kissed island. But then it hit me: we can all bring a little bit of that Key West magic back with us – by sharing our stories, supporting local LGBTQ+ organizations, and spreading the love to every corner of this beautiful world.
So go ahead, friends! Book those tickets, grab your sunscreen (and a healthy dose of humor), and get ready for the ultimate LGBTQ+ adventure in Key West!
