As I stepped off the Duval Street bus, the salty air enveloped me like a warm hug. I'd been looking forward to this trip to Key West for weeks, and now that I was finally here, I couldn't wait to dive into the vibrant LGBTQ+ scene that calls this island home. And let me tell you, Key West did NOT disappoint!
From the moment I arrived, I sensed the laid-back, welcoming vibe of this charming town. As a self-proclaimed "Pride enthusiast," I knew I was in for a treat. And boy, was I ever! Every corner of Duval Street – and beyond – seemed to pulse with energy, as if the very spirit of Pride had taken up residence here.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Key West? Isn't that just a tourist trap?" Ah, but no! This island has a rich history of embracing the LGBTQ+ community, dating back to the 1960s when it became a haven for counterculture types. Today, Key West proudly wears its rainbow flag like a badge of honor.
One of my first stops was the iconic La Te Da Cabaret & Restaurant, reportedly a favorite haunt of Ernest Hemingway himself! This iconic spot has been a staple of the island's nightlife since 1958 and continues to thrill audiences with its sultry burlesque shows, cabaret performances, and – yes! – drag queen extravaganzas. I mean, where else can you see a show featuring Cher impersonators, fire-breathers, and aerial acrobats all in one night?!
Of course, no trip to Key West would be complete without a visit to the Stonewall Inn-inspired Bar & Restaurant, Aqua. This cozy spot is a hub for local LGBTQ+ events, like drag bingo nights and karaoke extravaganzas – and their menu? Absolutely divine! From vegan "cheesy" mac 'n' cheese to decadent burgers, you'll find something to satisfy your taste buds.
As I strolled down Duval Street, I discovered an array of rainbow-colored boutiques, each with its own unique charm. Rainbow River Apparel offers a stunning selection of Pride-themed gear (those T-shirts are calling my name!), while Island City Oyster Bar boasts some of the freshest seafood you'll ever taste. And let's not forget the heavenly aromas wafting from the Key West Bakery – those croissants? Flaky, buttery bliss!
Now, I know some might say that Key West has become a bit too "touristy" for its own good. But trust me, there's still plenty of authentic, grassroots magic to be found here. For instance, the annual Fantasy Fest (October 22-31) is a wild and wacky celebration of all things Pride – think giant papier-mâché creations, costume contests, and... well, let's just say it gets WILD!
As I prepared to leave this little slice of heaven behind, I realized that Key West has become so much more than just a vacation destination for me. It's a symbol of resilience, creativity, and community – a beacon shining bright in the face of adversity.
So, if you're an LGBTQ+ traveler looking for a place where your authentic self can shine, or simply seeking a warm, welcoming haven from the world outside... come to Key West! As I always say: "In the immortal words of our beloved Miss Coco Peru, 'Honey, this is what love looks like!'"
**Until next time, stay proud and keep on dancing, darlings!**
