Hey there, readers It's your girl Helen Chen here, and I'm stoked to share the latest scoop on what's happening in the City of Angels – Los Angeles, that is!
As we gear up for Pride month, I've got the inside scoop on the hottest spots, events, and happenings in LA. Trust me, this city knows how to throw a party! From West Hollywood to Silver Lake, Downtown LA to the beaches, there's no shortage of LGBTQ+ excitement.
Let's start with the OG hub of queer culture: West Hollywood (WeHo). This iconic neighborhood is where it all began, and it continues to thrive. WeHo Pride, one of the largest and most beloved Pride celebrations in the country, takes place on June 11th this year. Expect a full-day extravaganza featuring live music, drag shows, and plenty of rainbow-colored fun!
But that's not all – WeHo is also home to some incredible LGBTQ+-owned businesses. One of my personal faves is The Abbey, a legendary gay bar with an unbeatable atmosphere and top-notch DJs. And just around the corner, you'll find Flaming Saddles, a sassy saloon serving up delicious grub and drinks in a retro-chic setting.
Now, let's take a trip to Silver Lake, where the artsy vibes are always on point. This hip neighborhood is home to some of LA's most innovative and inclusive spaces. Take, for example, the storied Eagle Rock Music Shop, which has been flying high as a queer-friendly hub since 2003. And don't miss the Silver Lake Community Garden, a hidden gem where you can connect with fellow plant enthusiasts (yes, there are queer gardeners too!).
As we head Downtown LA, you'll find an entirely different energy – think trendy bars, restaurants, and boutiques galore! The LGBTQ+-friendly hotspot is, without a doubt, Ace Hotel's rooftop bar, Upstairs. This stylish spot boasts stunning views of the city skyline and serves up expertly crafted cocktails (hello, Pride-themed drinks!).
And let's not forget about the beach – LA's got some amazing queer-friendly coastal spots too! Santa Monica Pier is always a blast, with its lively atmosphere, street performers, and (of course) Ferris wheel. When the sun goes down, head to The Albright, a seafood restaurant with an LGBTQ+-friendly vibe and stunning ocean views.
Last but not least, I want to give a shout-out to some of LA's most outstanding community organizations. There's the LA Gay & Lesbian Center, which has been providing vital services and support for over 50 years. And don't miss the ONE Archives at USC Libraries, an incredible resource dedicated to preserving LGBTQ+ history and culture.
As we count down to Pride month, I'm filled with gratitude for this vibrant city and its endless possibilities. Whether you're a longtime Angeleno or just visiting, LA's got something for everyone – from art galleries to underground clubs, and everything in between!
Stay proud, Los Angeles!
