Oh, Minneapolis! You may not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking of LGBTQ+ hotspots, but trust me, you're missing out on a treasure trove of rainbow-colored magic! As a proud resident and long-time fan of this Midwestern gem, I'm thrilled to share my insider's guide to the best of Minneapolis' vibrant queer scene.
First off, let's talk about the 'Sip: our beloved gay bars. You know, those cozy corners where we can be ourselves, grab a drink, and dance the night away? Well, Minneapolis has got you covered! The iconic 19th Amendment Lounge is still going strong after all these years, offering up stiff drinks, campy vibes, and some of the best karaoke in town. For something a bit more low-key, check out Gay Bar: a no-frills, no-judgment spot that's been serving up good times since 1974.
Now, let's venture outdoors! Minneapolis has an abundance of parks and green spaces perfect for picnics, people-watching, or just enjoying the fresh air. One of my personal faves is Powderhorn Park, which hosts an annual Pride festival that draws in thousands of revelers from across the region. And if you're looking for something a bit more...adventurous, grab your hiking boots and head to the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway: a 1.5-mile walking path that takes you on a scenic tour of Minneapolis' lakes, parks, and historic landmarks.
Of course, no visit to Minneapolis would be complete without a trip to Uptown – our city's very own queer mecca! This bustling neighborhood is home to some of the best restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues in town. Start your day at the iconic Eat Street Social, where you can indulge in gourmet grub and craft cocktails amidst a backdrop of funky decor. Then, grab a coffee at Spyhouse Coffee, which just so happens to be one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly spots in town.
As the sun begins to set, head over to the Uptown Theatre for some world-class entertainment. This intimate venue has played host to everyone from David Bowie to Lizzo (yes, that Lizzo!), and is always a hot ticket on nights when local acts like The Cactus Blossoms or The Pines are in town.
And finally, no trip to Minneapolis would be complete without a visit to the iconic Mall of America. Okay, so it might not seem like the most obvious destination for queer culture enthusiasts – but trust me, there's plenty to love! From the mall's very own rainbow-colored escalators (which just happen to lead you straight to the fabulous LEGO Store) to the on-site comedy club featuring stand-up routines from some of the funniest LGBTQ+ comedians out there, this massive shopping center has something for everyone.
So there you have it – my insider's guide to Minneapolis' queer scene! Whether you're a seasoned local or just passing through, I promise you'll find plenty to love in this rainbow-hued city. So grab your friends, don your best sparkly outfit, and get ready to experience the magic of Minneapolis for yourself!
