As I stepped off the light rail and onto the bustling streets of Minneapolis, I knew I was in for a treat. The Twin Cities' LGBTQ+ community is a force to be reckoned with, and I was stoked to dive into the vibrant culture that makes this place so special.
First stop: the iconic **Calhoun Square**. This outdoor shopping center might not seem like an obvious hotspot for queer culture, but trust me, it's a hub of activity. The square hosts regular events and festivals throughout the year, including the Minneapolis Pride Parade and Festival. I stumbled upon a group of friends celebrating a birthday with rainbow-colored decorations and a DJ spinning sick beats – the perfect setting to get this party started!
From Calhoun Square, I headed to **Uptown**, the heart of Minneapolis' queer scene. This charming neighborhood is home to **Eat Street Social**, a trendy bar that's a staple for LGBTQ+ folks and allies alike. With its cozy atmosphere and eclectic drink menu, it's the perfect spot to grab a drink and catch up with friends or make some new ones. I even spotted a group of rowdy revelers celebrating a birthday – talk about a party!
Next up: **Loring Park**. This beautiful green space is where many Minneapolis Pride events take place, including the annual Pride Festival and Parade. But it's not just for Pride – the park hosts various community events throughout the year, from outdoor concerts to volunteer days. I met with some friends at the park, and we enjoyed a picnic while watching the sunset over the beautiful city skyline.
Now, let's talk **Diverse Foods**, because food is love, and Minneapolis has got it in spades! From international eats like Somali and Ethiopian cuisine to good ol' American comfort food, there's something for every palate. I visited **Saeed's Mediterranean Cuisine** for some delicious shawarma and falafel – yum!
Of course, no trip to Minneapolis would be complete without a visit to the legendary **First Avenue**, home of Prince and so much more. This iconic music venue has hosted some of the biggest names in music and is still going strong today. I caught a show by local favorite **The Casket Lottery** and was blown away by their energy and talent.
Last but not least, let's give it up for **Pridemarket**, a fabulous marketplace that celebrates queer culture and community. With vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to LGBTQ+-friendly apparel, this is the perfect spot to find unique gifts or just connect with fellow queers. I picked up some amazing art pieces and chatted with the friendly folks behind **Rainbow Roller**, a mobile roller skating rink that's spreading joy throughout the city.
As I wrapped up my adventure in Minneapolis, I was struck by the sheer diversity and energy of this city. From its thriving arts scene to its inclusive community spirit, there's something for everyone here. Whether you're a long-time local or just visiting, Minneapolis is a place where you can be yourself – and that's a feeling worth celebrating!
