From iconic bars to innovative events, there's always something new to discover in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. One of my favorite haunts is the legendary Gay Bar, 19th Hole Pub & Grill. Located in the heart of Uptown, this welcoming spot has been a staple of the community for over two decades. With its lively atmosphere, extensive drink selection, and rotating events calendar, it's no wonder why 19th Hole remains a go-to destination for queer folks from all walks. But Minneapolis isn't just about bars – oh no! The city is home to some truly remarkable entertainment venues that showcase the best of local talent. Take, for instance, the iconic First Avenue nightclub. This legendary spot has been the hub of Minnesota's music scene since 1970, hosting everyone from Prince to Halsey. And with its world-famous entryway (anyone remember the "Purple Rain"-era graffiti?) and sprawling dance floor, it's an experience you won't soon forget. Of course, no discussion of Minneapolis entertainment would be complete without mentioning the Minneapolis Fringe Festival. This annual celebration of arts and culture has been a city staple for over 30 years, featuring an astonishing array of performances, installations, and events that showcase the best of local and regional talent. From innovative theater pieces to boundary-pushing dance troupes, the Fringe is an unmissable experience that highlights the creativity and diversity of our community. And then there's the Minneapolis Pride Festival – arguably one of the most iconic (and largest) Pride celebrations in the country! Each June, thousands of revelers gather at the Walker Art Center to celebrate all things queer. With its colorful parade route, live music performances, and vendor marketplace featuring everything from rainbow-hued wares to delicious eats, it's a party that truly embodies the spirit of inclusivity and joy. But what really sets Minneapolis apart is its commitment to community engagement and activism. The city is home to an impressive array of LGBTQ+ organizations, advocacy groups, and social clubs, all working tirelessly to promote visibility, inclusivity, and equal rights for our community. From the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition to the OutFront Minnesota advocacy organization, these tireless champions are making a real difference in the lives of queer folks across the state.
