Pride in the City of Lakes: A Celebration to Remember

There's something special about Minneapolis during Pride season. Maybe it's the way the sun shines down on us as we march through the streets, flags waving and music pumping. Or maybe it's the sense of community that fills every corner of our beloved city – from the lakeside bars to the trendy boutiques in Uptown. Whatever it is, I've found that Pride in Minneapolis is an experience like no other. As a proud Minneapolitan (pun intended!), I've had the privilege of celebrating Pride here for years. And let me tell you, this city knows how to throw a party! The first weekend in June always marks the start of a whirlwind week of events, from drag shows at the legendary Gay Bar to benefit dinners at top-tier restaurants like 112 Eatery. But Pride isn't just about the parties – although, let's be real, we Minneapolitans know how to throw a mean bash! It's also about coming together as a community to celebrate our diversity and promote acceptance. And what better place to do that than in the city of lakes? One of my favorite Pride traditions is the annual parade, which winds its way through the streets of downtown Minneapolis. With floats featuring local businesses, organizations, and – of course – plenty of drag queens, it's a spectacle unlike any other. And when the sun starts setting over the Mississippi River, we gather in Loring Park for the after-party, complete with live music, food trucks, and (reportedly) more than a few surprise performances. But Pride isn't just about the big events – it's also about the everyday moments of connection and community that make our city so special. From the rainbow-colored murals popping up on building walls to the countless LGBTQ+-owned businesses dotting our neighborhoods, Minneapolis is a place where we can be ourselves without apology. Take, for example, the iconic Eat Street Social in East Town, which celebrates Pride with a special menu and drag show each year. Or visit the fabulous boutique shop, The Men's Wearhouse at Mall of America, which has been a staple of the community for decades. These are just a few of the many businesses that make Minneapolis such a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ folks. Of course, no discussion of Pride in Minneapolis would be complete without mentioning our beloved lakes. Whether you're strolling along the lakefront path or enjoying a Pride-themed boat party on Lake Calhoun, there's no shortage of ways to soak up the sun and celebrate with friends. As I look back on my own experiences celebrating Pride in Minneapolis, I'm reminded that it's not just about having fun (although, let's be real, we Minneapolitans know how to have a good time!). It's also about creating connections, building community, and – most importantly – being proud of who we are.
