As I stepped off the plane in Mykonos, Greece, I could feel the energy coursing through my veins. This tiny island in the Aegean Sea is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and – more recently – its thriving LGBTQ+ community. And what better way to celebrate this sense of belonging than with a Pride party?!
Reportedly, over 10,000 people attended this year's Mykonos Pride parade, making it one of the largest in Greece! The procession wound its way through the island's picturesque streets, culminating in a joyous gathering at Paraga Beach. And I was there, right in the thick of it!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Helen, this sounds like just another Pride party." Ah, but no! Mykonos takes the concept of inclusivity to new heights – literally! The island's iconic windmills stood tall as a backdrop for the festivities, while rainbow flags fluttered in the breeze. It was a veritable explosion of color and joy!
As I danced alongside fellow revelers, I couldn't help but think about the strides this community has taken in recent years. Allegedly, Mykonos is now one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations in Europe! (Although, I must admit, there's still room for improvement – more on that later.)
One of the highlights was undoubtedly the incredible lineup of performers and DJs. Greek pop sensations like Elena Tsirani and Giorgos Kapoutzidis got the party started, while international stars like Kygo and David Guetta kept the energy going all night long! And let's not forget the stunning drag performances that left us all gasping in awe!
But what truly sets Mykonos apart is its commitment to supporting local businesses and community initiatives. I've found that many of these enterprises are owned and operated by members of the LGBTQ+ community themselves, providing a safe space for everyone to express themselves.
Take, for instance, the island's beloved restaurant, Captain Zissimos! This cozy eatery has been serving up mouthwatering Mediterranean cuisine for over 20 years – and its owners, Maria and her partner, have been instrumental in promoting LGBTQ+ visibility throughout Mykonos. (By the way, be sure to try their famous moussaka – it's a game-changer!)
Of course, no trip to Mykonos would be complete without a visit to the island's iconic Little Venice neighborhood. This charming district is famous for its colorful buildings, quaint shops, and – naturally – stunning views of the Aegean Sea. And let me tell you, it's a photographer's dream come true!
As I reflect on my time in Mykonos, I'm reminded that Pride isn't just about celebrating our differences; it's also about embracing our shared humanity. This community has shown us that even in times of uncertainty and division, we can come together and create something truly special.
So here's to the resilient spirit of Mykonos – a beacon of hope and acceptance for all!
