Y'all, I'm still reeling from my most recent trip to the Big Easy – New Orleans, that is! As a proud queer travel enthusiast, I was determined to dive headfirst into the city's rich LGBTQ+ culture and history. And boy, did NOLA deliver! From steamy nights in the French Quarter to sultry days in the Marigny, I immersed myself in the city's unique blend of Creole charm and rebellious spirit.
First things first: let me tell you about the food – oh, the glorious food! Beignets at Cafe du Monde? Check. Po' boys from Parkway Bakery? You betcha! And don't even get me started on the gumbo... My taste buds are still doing the two-step in celebration!
Now, onto the real reason I'm writing this article: the LGBTQ+ scene in NOLA is absolutely electric! As a queer traveler, you'll find a welcoming community that's been proudly waving its rainbow flag since the 1970s. The French Quarter is ground zero for gay nightlife, with hotspots like Oz (reportedly one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in the country) and the Eagle (a leather-friendly haven).
But it's not all about the clubs – oh no! New Orleans is also home to a thriving queer arts scene. Catch a show at the Dragon's Den, an intimate performance space that's been featuring local and national LGBTQ+ performers for over 20 years. Or grab a drink at the iconic Hotel Monteleone's Carousel Bar & Lounge, where you can sip on a Sazerac while taking in the stunning views of the Mississippi River.
Of course, no trip to NOLA would be complete without a visit to the legendary Bourbon Street. Yes, it can get a little wild (especially during Mardi Gras!), but there's something undeniably magical about strolling down that iconic street with your favorite people by your side. Just be sure to bring your dancing shoes – and a healthy dose of caution!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Ryan, what about the history?" Ah, my friend, New Orleans is steeped in it! From the French Colonial era to the Civil War and beyond, this city has been shaped by its complex past. Take a stroll through the charming St. Roch neighborhood, where you'll find stunning Creole architecture and a poignant reminder of the city's rich history – including the infamous Storyville red-light district.
As a queer traveler, I was particularly moved by the city's deep connection to the LGBTQ+ community's struggle for equality. From the legendary bars like Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop (reportedly one of the oldest continuously operating bars in the country) to the contemporary gay bars and clubs, New Orleans has long been a beacon of acceptance and inclusivity.
In fact, NOLA is home to some incredible queer-friendly organizations, including the Crescent City Gay Chorus, which has been performing for over 30 years. And let's not forget about the annual French Quarter Festival, which celebrates the city's rich musical heritage – including its thriving LGBTQ+ music scene!
So, what are you waiting for? Come on down to New Orleans and experience it all for yourself! Trust me when I say that this vibrant city will leave you feeling like a glass of sweet tea on a hot summer day: refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the world.
