Palm Springs, you never cease to amaze me! As a long-time resident of this stunning desert oasis, I've had the privilege of witnessing the city's evolution into a haven for LGBTQ+ individuals. And this year's Pride celebrations did not disappoint!
As we welcomed June, the month-long festivities kicked off with a bang – or should I say, a rainbow explosion? From parades to parties, and from drag shows to fundraising events, Palm Springs proved once again that it's a city that truly gets what love is all about.
One of the highlights (and I'm not just saying this because I was there!) was the star-studded opening night gala for Pride Month. Held at the iconic Riviera Palm Springs, this black-tie affair drew A-listers and local luminaries alike to mingle, dance, and show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
And what a night it was! The red carpet was abuzz with excitement as attendees sipped on champagne and nibbled on canapés while mingling with some of the most fascinating figures in entertainment. I had the pleasure of chatting with none other than "RuPaul's Drag Race" alum, Carson Kressley, who was gracious enough to share his thoughts on Palm Springs' Pride celebrations.
"This city has a special energy – it's like a warm hug that envelops you," he said with a smile. "The people here are so welcoming and open-minded; it's the perfect place to celebrate love and acceptance."
I couldn't agree more, Carson! Palm Springs has always been a beacon of inclusivity and tolerance, and this year's Pride festivities were no exception.
But what really stole the show (pun intended) was the sheer variety of events and activities on offer. From beachside yoga sessions to cocktail parties at trendy hotspots like The Parker Palm Springs, there was something for everyone in this sun-kissed city.
And let's not forget the main event – the Pride Parade itself! A dazzling procession of floats, marching bands, and even a few surprise celebrity appearances (hello, Todrick Hall!), it was a true spectacle that drew thousands to the streets of Palm Springs. I danced along with the best of them, waving my rainbow flag high in the air as we chanted "Love is love" and "Pride is pride."
Of course, no Pride celebration would be complete without a nod to the pioneers who paved the way for our community's progress. In Palm Springs, that meant honoring local trailblazers like the one and only Judy LaRock, a legendary drag queen who helped found the city's first LGBTQ+ bar back in the 1980s.
As I looked around at the sea of faces – old friends, new acquaintances, and total strangers-turned-friends-in-the-making – I knew that this was what Palm Springs Pride was all about: community, connection, and the unbridled joy of being our authentic selves.
So here's to you, Palm Springs! You may be a small city, but your impact on the LGBTQ+ community is anything but. Keep shining bright, and we'll keep celebrating love in all its forms – with pride!
