Ah, Portland! This city has stolen my heart, and I'm not alone. From the iconic bridges to the quirky coffee shops, there's no place like it. And when it comes to LGBTQ+ culture, Portland is the real MVP. As a local, I've had the pleasure of experiencing firsthand the city's vibrant community spirit, and let me tell you – it's all about the love!
For starters, Portland has a reputation for being one of the most welcoming cities in the country. And it's easy to see why: from the rainbow flags waving above the streets to the inclusive vibes at local bars and clubs, this city is all about embracing diversity. Take the famous Hawthorne District, for example – this bustling hub of activity is home to some of Portland's most iconic queer spots, including the beloved bar, Crush.
Crush has been a staple of the community for over 20 years, serving up stiff drinks and even stiffer wit to an audience that's as diverse as the city itself. And it's not just the bartenders who are keeping it real – the regulars at Crush are some of the most lovable, laid-back folks you'll ever meet. Trust me, I've been there for countless nights, sipping on a whiskey and swapping stories with the locals.
But Portland's LGBTQ+ culture isn't just about the bars (although, let's be real, the bars are a big part of it). The city is also home to some truly amazing queer-owned businesses that are making waves in the community. Take the iconic boutique, Fancy Tiger, for example – this adorable shop on Division Street has been serving up handmade jewelry, clothing, and accessories for over 15 years.
Not only is Fancy Tiger a hub of creativity and self-expression, but it's also a symbol of what Portland does best: supporting local entrepreneurs and fostering community connection. And did I mention that the owners, Kate and Shannon, are some of the most wonderful people you'll ever meet? They're always hosting events and workshops in-store, from knitting circles to queer-friendly yoga classes.
Of course, no discussion of Portland's LGBTQ+ culture would be complete without mentioning the city's iconic Pride celebrations. For over 45 years, Portland has been throwing one of the wildest, most inclusive Pride parties in the country – think marching bands, drag queens, and more rainbow flags than you can shake a stick at!
This year's celebration was no exception – with tens of thousands of attendees, it was truly a sight to behold. And as I looked out over the sea of smiling faces, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this city that has so warmly welcomed me (and countless others) into its arms.
So here's to Portland: may your queer spirit forever be bright, and may your love always be loud and proud!
