Let me tell you, there's something special about Portland. As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I've had the privilege of experiencing this city in all its glory – and let me assure you, it's a wild ride!
As someone who's deeply invested in the local business scene, I've seen firsthand how Portland has evolved into a hub for creativity, inclusivity, and pure, unadulterated fun. From the moment you step foot in this city, you can feel the energy – it's like the entire community is one big, happy family!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Winston, what makes Portland so special?" Well, my friends, let me tell you – it's not just about the food trucks (although, trust me, they're a game-changer). It's not just about the breweries (although, okay, they're pretty great too). No, no – it's about the people. The culture. The community.
Take, for example, our beloved Hawthorne District. This iconic neighborhood is a melting pot of quirky shops, eclectic eateries, and some of the most passionate small business owners you'll ever meet. From the Rainbow sign (which, might I add, is a beacon of hope and acceptance) to the countless queer-owned enterprises dotting the landscape, Hawthorne is a true reflection of Portland's values: creativity, diversity, and a healthy dose of weirdness.
And then there's Alberta Street – another community hotbed that's become synonymous with LGBTQ+ culture. This charming neighborhood is home to some of the city's most beloved bars, clubs, and venues, each one pulsing with its own unique energy. From the legendary CC Slaughters to the sultry sounds emanating from Dante's, you can't help but feel like you're part of something special when you're on Alberta.
Of course, no discussion of Portland's LGBTQ+ scene would be complete without mentioning Pride. Ah, yes – that magical time of year when our city comes together to celebrate love, acceptance, and the power of community. Whether you're marching down the street with your best friends or simply taking in the sights and sounds from a sidewalk perch, Portland's Pride is an experience unlike any other.
Now, I know some folks might say that Portland is all about the food (and let me tell you, they wouldn't be wrong – we do have some of the best eats in the country!). But for me, it's always been about the people. The community. The energy.
That's why, when I think about my favorite Portland spots, it's not just the bars or clubs that come to mind (although, okay, they're fun too). No – it's the coffee shops, like Coava Coffee Roasters, where you can grab a cup of joe and catch up with old friends. It's the indie bookstores, like Annie Bloom Booksellers, where you can get lost in the aisles for hours on end. And yes, even the breweries, like Cascade Brewing Barrel House, where you can sample some of the finest craft beer this side of the Mississippi.
So here's to Portland – a city that's always getting ready to rumble, always pushing boundaries, and always celebrating its queer community with open arms. If you haven't been yet, trust me – it's time to get on down here and experience it for yourself!
