Hey there, friends! As a proud Portlander and LGBTQ+ advocate, I'm thrilled to share my enthusiasm for our city's business scene. From bustling breweries to innovative startups, Portland is a hub of creativity and inclusivity that has captured my heart. In this article, I'll take you on a journey through the best of what Portland has to offer – from local gems to community-driven initiatives.
First off, let me tell you: Portland loves its coffee! And as an LGBTQ+ business owner myself (my partner and I run a small queer-owned boutique), I know how important it is to have a strong support system. That's why I'm excited to highlight some of the amazing queer-friendly cafes in town. Bean There Coffee Roasters, for instance, has been a staple on Hawthorne Boulevard since 1993 – and for good reason! Not only do they serve up some of the best coffee in the city, but their owners are also long-time LGBTQ+ advocates who have hosted countless fundraisers and events for our community.
But Portland's business scene isn't just about coffee (although, let's be real, it's a big part of it). We're home to a thriving startup ecosystem that's attracting entrepreneurs from all over the world. One of my personal favorite spots is Ziba Design, an award-winning firm that specializes in innovative product design and development. As an ally-friendly company with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, Ziba is a shining example of what it means to be a progressive business leader.
Of course, no discussion of Portland's business scene would be complete without mentioning our iconic food carts! Who can resist the allure of a perfectly grilled cheese or a steaming hot bowl of pho on a crisp Oregon morning? As it turns out, many folks in our community can't get enough of that cart life. Take, for example, the folks at Lardo – a popular sandwich shop with a location right in the heart of the city. Not only do they serve up mouthwatering meats and cheeses, but they've also been vocal supporters of LGBTQ+ causes and events.
One of the most exciting developments on the business front is the rise of queer-owned and operated bars and clubs. We're talking spots like Crush Bar, one of the oldest continuously operating lesbian bars in the country! This stalwart institution has been a mainstay of our community for over 20 years – and it's still going strong. With its cozy atmosphere, killer cocktails, and regular events, Crush is the perfect place to catch up with friends or make some new ones.
Last but not least, I want to give a shout-out to the incredible work being done by organizations like Portland Pride and Q Center. These community-driven initiatives are dedicated to promoting LGBTQ+ visibility and empowerment through education, advocacy, and direct services. Whether you're looking for support resources, event information, or just a friendly ear, these organizations are here for you.
I hope this article has given you a taste of the vibrant business scene that's thriving in Portland. From coffee to cocktails, startups to community leaders, our city is full of innovative spirit and inclusivity. As an LGBTQ+ advocate and local business owner myself, I'm proud to call Portland my home – and I know you will be too. So come on down, grab a cup of coffee (or a cocktail), and experience the magic for yourself!
