As I stepped off the plane in Puerto Vallarta, the warm Mexican sun greeting me like an old friend was just the beginning of my culinary adventure. This vibrant city, nestled on the Pacific coast of Mexico, has long been a haven for the LGBTQ+ community – and its food scene is no exception! From cozy beachside eateries to upscale restaurants serving up gourmet masterpieces, Puerto Vallarta's dining landscape is as rich and diverse as its culture.
As I settled into my first meal at **La Palapa**, a beloved institution in Old Town, I knew I was in for a treat. This charming spot has been serving up fresh seafood and local favorites for over 30 years – and it shows! I indulged in the famous "Camarones al Mojo de Ajo" (garlic shrimp) and a side of creamy "Salsa Roja" to go with my tortilla chips. The flavors were so bold, so authentic, that I knew right then and there I'd be back for more.
Next up was **La Lechonera**, a colorful eatery in the heart of town that serves up mouth-watering BBQ and traditional Mexican dishes. Their "Carne Asada" (grilled steak) is reportedly some of the best in the city, marinated to perfection in a secret blend of spices and herbs. I opted for the "Tacos de lengua" (beef tongue tacos), which were literally melt-in-your-mouth divine.
For a taste of something new and exciting, **Kokai** was my go-to spot. This stylish restaurant, located on the Malecon, offers an eclectic menu that blends Asian-fusion flavors with local Mexican flair. I went for the "Tacos de Wagyu" (Wagyu beef tacos), which were served with a side of tangy "Kimchi Slaw." Talk about a flavor bomb!
Of course, no trip to Puerto Vallarta would be complete without trying some authentic street food. **El Sabor del Mar** is a must-visit for any foodie looking to experience the city's casual, laid-back vibe. Their "Tacos de pescado" (fish tacos) are allegedly some of the best in town, topped with fresh cabbage, radish, and a drizzle of lime juice.
As I wrapped up my culinary journey through Puerto Vallarta, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this vibrant city's warm welcome. Whether you're in the mood for a quick bite at a beachside taco stand or an upscale dining experience at one of the many excellent restaurants, Puerto Vallarta has something for everyone. And let's not forget the incredible LGBTQ+ community that makes this place so special – it's clear that love is always on the menu!
