I've found my happy place – and it's not just the stunning beaches or the vibrant nightlife of Puerto Vallarta (although, let me tell you, those things are pretty amazing too!). It's the sense of community that pulses through this Mexican coastal city like a vital artery. As an LGBTQ+ traveler, I've had the privilege of experiencing the best of PV, and I'm here to share my enthusiasm with you!
Puerto Vallarta has long been a beacon of acceptance and inclusivity for our community. Since the 1960s, it's been a go-to destination for LGBTQ+ travelers seeking sun, fun, and freedom from societal expectations. Today, this charming city is more than just a vacation spot – it's a hub of creativity, activism, and solidarity.
One of PV's most iconic gathering places is the Malecón, a scenic waterfront promenade that comes alive with music, dance, and color during the evening hours. On any given night, you might stumble upon impromptu drag shows, live mariachi performances, or simply a group of friends sharing stories and laughter as they watch the sunset. It's the perfect blend of laid-back, small-town charm and big-city energy.
Of course, no trip to Puerto Vallarta would be complete without experiencing the city's legendary nightlife! From the opulent bars and clubs along the Malecón to the more low-key, intimate gatherings at places like La Noche, there's something for every taste and style. And let me tell you, the DJs here know how to get the party started!
But PV is more than just a party scene – it's also a city deeply rooted in tradition and culture. The colorful streets of Old Town are filled with artisan shops, restaurants, and bars that offer a glimpse into the city's rich history and heritage. Visit the iconic Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a stunning Catholic church with an impressive bell tower that dominates the skyline.
As an LGBTQ+ community, we know all too well the importance of having a safe space to be ourselves – and Puerto Vallarta has got us covered! The city is home to a thriving network of LGBTQ+-friendly businesses, from restaurants and bars to hotels and vacation rentals. Many of these establishments proudly display their "LGBTQ+ friendly" signs, giving visitors a sense of security and belonging.
One such spot is the fabulous Hotel Mercurio, which has been welcoming LGBTQ+ travelers for decades. This stylish boutique hotel offers stunning views of the city and the Bay of Banderas, as well as an array of amenities and services designed specifically with our community in mind.
But what truly sets Puerto Vallarta apart is its unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. From Pride celebrations that draw thousands of attendees to year-round events like the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOT), PV is a city that truly understands the value of community and solidarity.
In recent years, Puerto Vallarta has also become a hub for LGBTQ+ activism and advocacy. Organizations like the Puerto Vallarta Pride Committee and the Vallarta Gay Association work tirelessly to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusivity throughout the region. These efforts have led to significant strides in reducing discrimination and promoting equal rights for all members of our community.
As I reflect on my experiences in Puerto Vallarta, I'm reminded that this city is more than just a vacation spot – it's a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity. It's a place where we can be ourselves, without apology or expectation. And as an LGBTQ+ traveler, there's no better feeling than knowing that you've found a community that welcomes you with open arms.
So come for the sun, stay for the fun – but most importantly, come to experience the warmth and inclusivity of Puerto Vallarta's rainbow revolution!
