As I stroll down Wilton Drive, the epicenter of Wilton Manors' vibrant LGBTQ+ community, I'm reminded of why this charming city has earned its reputation as a haven for those seeking acceptance and inclusivity. Amidst the lush palm trees and colorful murals, the air is electric with excitement – a palpable energy that can't be contained.
For me, Wilton Manors has become more than just a place to call home; it's a sanctuary where I can be my authentic self without apology. And I'm not alone! This pocket-sized city (with a population of less than 12,000) packs a punch when it comes to community spirit and nightlife.
One of the most iconic spots is The Alibi, Wilton Manors' oldest continuously operating gay bar. Since 1991, this beloved institution has been the go-to spot for drag shows, karaoke nights, and impromptu dance parties that spill onto the sidewalk. As I walk in, I'm greeted with warm smiles from familiar faces – a testament to the sense of belonging that permeates every corner of this city.
Just around the corner, The Stonewall Resort is a hotspot for live music and comedy performances. This cozy venue has played host to some of the biggest names in LGBTQ+ entertainment, including the incomparable Bianca Del Rio (star of RuPaul's Drag Race). When I caught up with local comedian, Josh Horton, he raved about the resort: "It's an incredible space that fosters creativity and community. I've performed here countless times – it never gets old!"
Wilton Manors' love affair with art is another reason why this city shines so brightly. The Wilton Manors Public Art Program has transformed the city's landscape into a vibrant canvas, featuring over 20 murals by local and international artists. These stunning works of art not only add to the city's aesthetic appeal but also serve as powerful statements of acceptance and solidarity.
One such masterpiece can be found at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Wilton Drive, where a breathtaking mural honors the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson – an American LGBTQ+ rights activist who co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries). This poignant tribute is a reminder that our community's history is rich and complex, deserving of recognition and celebration.
Of course, no trip to Wilton Manors would be complete without indulging in the city's renowned culinary scene. From the mouthwatering Cuban cuisine at Azucar Ice Cream Company to the decadent brunch offerings at The Lodge Wilton Manors, there's something for every taste bud. When I stopped by The Divine Cafe, owner and chef, Deborah Klein, shared her enthusiasm about the city's food culture: "Wilton Manors has become a melting pot of culinary delights – it's an incredible thing to be a part of!"
As I wrap up this love letter to Wilton Manors, I'm reminded that our community is built on the bedrock of acceptance, inclusivity, and love. This city may be small in size, but its impact on the LGBTQ+ world is immeasurable.
So come for the nightlife, stay for the art, and leave with a heart full of joy – because in Wilton Manors, we're living our truth, loud and proud!
