I've lived in Wilton Manors for a hot minute now, and let me tell you – this little slice of LGBTQ+ heaven is where my heart is! As a proud resident and nightlife enthusiast, I've had the pleasure of witnessing our community come together to celebrate who we are, loud and proud!
Pride month may be over, but Wilton Manors' Pride vibes never fade. Our charming, rainbow-colored neighborhood has become a beacon for inclusivity, diversity, and self-expression. And trust me, when you walk down Wilton Drive, the energy is palpable! From the iconic Rainbow Bridge to the colorful street art, every inch of this community screams "PRIDE!"
As I stroll along the drive, I'm greeted with warm smiles from familiar faces – owners of my favorite bars, restaurants, and shops. You see, in Wilton Manors, we're not just a community; we're a family. And on any given day, you'll find us supporting each other at events like the annual Pride Parade, the Rainbow Flag Raising Ceremony, or simply by being our authentic selves.
One of my favorite haunts is The Stonewall Resort, where I've shared countless nights with friends and made unforgettable memories. This iconic watering hole has been a Wilton Manors staple for decades, serving up more than just cocktails – it's the heart of our community! Whether you're looking to network, make new connections, or simply enjoy some live music, The Stonewall Resort is the place to be.
Of course, no Pride celebration would be complete without honoring our history and the pioneers who paved the way. Wilton Manors' very own Barbara Poma and her partner, Dennis Stevens, are local legends for their tireless efforts in creating a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. Their groundbreaking work at Pulse nightclub – which tragically suffered a devastating attack in 2016 – serves as a powerful reminder of our resilience and capacity to come together in times of need.
In Wilton Manors, we take pride (pun intended!) in recognizing the importance of intersectionality. Our community is diverse, vibrant, and thriving, with individuals from all walks of life coming together to celebrate our shared humanity. From the Wilton Manors Business Improvement District's efforts to support local businesses to the array of services offered by organizations like The Pride Center at Equality Park, our community is built on a foundation of love, acceptance, and inclusivity.
As I look around this enchanting neighborhood, I'm reminded that being proud isn't just about celebrating who we are; it's about creating a world where everyone can be their authentic self. Wilton Manors may be small in size, but our Pride is mighty – and we wouldn't have it any other way!
So the next time you find yourself in Wilton Manors, take a stroll down Wilton Drive, visit The Stonewall Resort, or simply sit back and enjoy the warm, welcoming atmosphere. You'll quickly discover why this little corner of the world is a magnet for LGBTQ+ individuals seeking community, acceptance, and unadulterated joy!
