Austin Proper Hotel

Trendy hotel in Austin. It’s “cute” because everything is small. They call in luxury. Not sure if it is, definitely trendy. But it’s nice. The place is clean . I looked for a trash can for ten minutes, they have none, apparently they don’t want trash cans in public places. Stairs : weirdly the access is between double doors and chairs are stored in that space between the doors on the 2nd floor. Just odd things like this that are probably not even important to most, but they made me scratch my head. They have a pool, no one was by it every time I looked. Mexican restaurant on property was full on Wednesday night when I arrived: great fajitas. My room window faces garage. Literally it’s like I live in the garage, the buildings are super close. No day light for me in my room for three days. Staff is friendly. The decor vibe is kind of old vintage style , but trendy. Dark. It’s comfortable but only if you are one person in the room because it’s tiny. Bathroom is nice and actually a good size! The shower is the best thing in the room. Great spa quality shampoo and lotion that smell heavenly. Access to the hotel: they have residential part to it and if you don’t realise it, you can’t get in and it’s unattended. So I was waiting for a few minutes for anyone to come (valet podium is there) , even called the hotel (no answer on two calls) and then I saw someone walk out and they explained to me that I need to drive around the corner. It was my first time visiting and so I followed gps . Basically the hotel entrance is attended if you are in the right place.

As an interfaith wedding rabbi and officiant, I have officiated weddings in many beautiful venues over the years. What struck me about Austin Proper was that it never felt like a hotel wedding. From the moment guests arrived, there was a strong sense of personality and place. The design, architecture, and atmosphere created an experience that felt uniquely Austin while still offering the sophistication and service one would expect from a world-class property. As someone who spends a great deal of time observing how venues shape the experience of a wedding, I appreciated that Austin Proper offered more than beautiful event spaces. It created an environment that felt vibrant, stylish, and welcoming without ever feeling staged or pretentious. The setting enhanced the celebration while allowing the focus to remain on the couple and the people gathered to celebrate with them. What I remember most was the energy of the venue. There was a sense of creativity and modernity throughout the property that made the wedding feel distinctive and memorable. It felt like a reflection of Austin itself: sophisticated, expressive, and full of character. The staff was professional, attentive, and a pleasure to work with throughout the event. Every interaction reflected a commitment to hospitality and an understanding of how to create an exceptional guest experience. I would gladly recommend Austin Proper to any couple looking for a wedding venue that combines outstanding design, exceptional service, and a celebration that feels connected to the spirit and culture of the city around it.

I have both worked and stayed at many luxury hotels over the years, but Austin Proper really stood out to me. From the moment we arrived, the service felt genuinely warm and thoughtful. I was celebrating my birthday, and the front desk staff went above and beyond to make it feel special, which meant a lot and set the tone for the entire stay. The design of the hotel is stunning. Everything feels modern and curated without being cold or overly trendy. The rooms and common spaces were immaculately clean, and I loved all of the greenery throughout the property. It creates a calm, relaxing atmosphere that makes you forget you are in the middle of downtown Austin. That being said, the location is fantastic with beautiful river views and easy access to everything. The view from the rooftop pool was gorgeous (especially during sunset), the lounge chairs were very comfortable, and the service was friendly and attentive. The food and drinks were another highlight. Every cocktail and meal we had was flavorful, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared. Don't leave without trying La Piscina! This is one of those hotels that feels special from start to finish. Stylish but welcoming, luxurious without trying too hard, and absolutely worth the stay. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Austin.

We stayed at the Proper Hotel for four days in a Grand King View room, which is one of their larger options without being a suite. The room itself was a good size, but the “view” didn’t really feel like much of a view at all. The bathroom setup was great — strong shower pressure, a spacious double‑sink area, a Dyson blow dryer, and a perfect makeup mirror. We did have an issue with the AC not cooling properly, but after two calls they fixed it. The team was very communicative and consistently checked in through WhatsApp, which I really appreciated. They also let me request housekeeping through WhatsApp, which was a nice touch. One thing worth mentioning: the hotel has a very strong smell throughout the hallways, even on higher floors. I’m not sure if it comes from the restaurants or something they burn, but it’s noticeable. The restaurants and bars in the hotel are great — good food, strong drinks, and a fun vibe overall. I’d stay here again for a fun, lively Austin trip. It’s vibey, busy, and social. But I wouldn’t choose it for a family stay.

Overall, I liked this hotel and had a positive stay, but there are some notable drawbacks worth mentioning. During busy times, the hotel feels overcrowded, elevator waits can be long, parking is difficult with the valet when it's busy, and the check-in area can get backed up as well. The lobby bar is very pretty but gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, my Bonvoy Gold Elite status was not honored nor did I receive any benefits from it which was disappointing. That said, the rooms were cozy and comfortable, and aside from the capacity issues, I really don't have major complaints about the stay itself. It feels like the hotel could benefit from better crowd management or more space to handle peak times. Dining and amenities were strong highlights. In-room dining was excellent, and breakfast at The Peacock stood out with very flavorful, tasty dishes. I'll provide a separate feedback for it. The gym is one of the best I've seen at a hotel well equipped, including Pilates tables, a steam room, and overall great facilities. The massage spa was also excellent and very relaxing. pricing is reasonable for the massage at a high end hotel. Goldie's, the bar in the evening, and the tea and coffee spot in the morning (with pastries) were especially warm and welcoming - easily one of the highlights of the stay. I'd rate this closer to a 4-minus, mainly due to pricing which come with some expectations. In my humble opinion, the hotel is a bit overpriced for what it offers. I've stayed at higher-end properties, and this one feels slightly behind compared to others in that category.
