As I write this article, I'm sitting in one of my favorite Denver spots – a bustling coffee shop on Colfax Avenue – surrounded by rainbow flags, colorful murals, and the hum of LGBTQ+ energy. It's Pride month, and the city is buzzing with excitement! For me, there's no better feeling than being part of this vibrant community, where love knows no bounds and everyone can be their authentic selves.
Denver's Pride celebration has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1974. Today, it's one of the largest and most iconic events in the country, attracting thousands of revelers from across the region. The city's commitment to inclusivity and diversity is palpable, as you'll find drag queens serving looks at the corner of 17th and Blake, while rainbow-clad marchers make their way down Civic Center Park.
I've found that Denver's Pride scene is all about community – and I'm not just talking about the 16-block parade route or the massive festival in City Park. It's about the countless bars, clubs, and venues that come alive during this special time of year. From the sultry beats at Tracks Nightclub to the avant-garde performances at the Bug Theatre, there's something for every taste and preference.
One of my favorite Pride traditions is the annual Drag Brunch, where some of Denver's most talented queens (and kings!) serve up a plate of sass and sparkle alongside a delicious meal. This year, I'm excited to hear that the fabulous DJ Jinx will be spinning tracks at the event – get ready for a morning of non-stop dancing and laughter!
Of course, no Pride celebration would be complete without a nod to the history and struggles of our community. The Denver Pride Committee has been working tirelessly to ensure that this year's festivities honor the pioneers who paved the way for our current moment of freedom and equality. Expect powerful performances, inspiring speeches, and – as always – a healthy dose of rainbows and glitter.
For me, Pride is more than just a party or a parade – it's a celebration of love, liberation, and resilience. It's about recognizing that we're all in this together, and that every single one of us deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Whether you're a longtime Denver resident or just visiting for the festivities, I invite you to join me in embracing our city's vibrant LGBTQ+ culture.
So grab your friends, don your best Pride attire (I'll see you in my rainbow-colored onesie!), and get ready to party like it's 1999! With its stunning mountain backdrop, eclectic neighborhoods, and unwavering commitment to inclusivity, Denver is the perfect place to experience the magic of Pride. See you on the streets!
