Pride in Toronto? You better believe it! The City of Toronto has been celebrating Pride for over three decades, and I've had the pleasure of being a part of it. As an out-and-proud resident of this amazing city, I can confidently say that our Pride celebration is one of the best in the world!
Let me tell you why. First off, Toronto's Pride parade is HUGE! We're talking tens of thousands of people lining up along Yonge Street, from Church to Bloor. It's a sea of colour and music and energy, with floats, marching groups, and community organizations showcasing their unique personalities and stories.
But it's not just the parade that makes our Pride so special. Oh no! The whole city comes alive with events and parties and rallies and more! From Friday night to Sunday afternoon, you can bet your bottom dollar there's something happening in Toronto to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community.
Take, for instance, the annual Pride Kick-Off Party at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. This place is the epicentre of queer culture in Toronto, and their Pride party is always a wild ride! Expect live music, drag performances, and dancing until the wee hours with your closest friends (or make some new ones – we're all about community here!).
And then there's the iconic Pride Month opening ceremony at City Hall. This year, it was reported that over 10,000 people gathered to hear inspiring speeches from local leaders and activists, as well as performances by renowned artists. It's a real privilege (pun intended) to be a part of this momentous occasion!
Of course, no Pride in Toronto would be complete without a visit to the famous Church Street strip! This iconic stretch is home to some of the city's most beloved queer bars and clubs, like Woody's and The Black Eagle. Come for the drinks, stay for the atmosphere (and maybe even catch a few impromptu performances or surprise parties!).
But Pride in Toronto isn't just about partying (although, let's be real – that's definitely a big part of it!). It's also about celebration, solidarity, and community. This year, reportedly over 50 corporate sponsors partnered with the City of Toronto to support our LGBTQ+ community, making this the largest Pride celebration in Canadian history!
So if you ever find yourself in Toronto during Pride month (June), grab your rainbow flag and get ready for an unforgettable experience! Trust me when I say that Toronto's Pride party is one for the books.
