I've found myself lost in the Tennessee streets more times than I can count, and yet, every time I stumble upon a new gem, it feels like Nashville is giving me a warm hug. This city has a way of getting under your skin, making you feel like you're part of something bigger than yourself. And trust me, as an out-of-towner who's fallen head over heels in love with Music City, that's exactly what I've found.
As the sun sets on Broadway, the lights come alive, and the sounds of honky-tonks fill the air. It's like the city is saying, "Hey, Ryan! Come on down!" And who can resist? The energy is electric, the music is infectious, and the people are as warm as a summer night.
Let me tell you about some of my favorite spots. Tootsie's Orchid Lounge might be a tourist trap, but for good reason – it's where legends like Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson got their start. And if you're feeling adventurous, head to The Stage on Broadway for karaoke nights that'll have you singing your heart out (I'm guilty of belting out "Achy Breaky Heart" one too many times).
When the sun comes up, Nashville's daytime charm takes over. The 12 South neighborhood is a must-visit – those Instagram-famous murals are just the beginning. Take a stroll down the street and you'll stumble upon some of the city's best eats: Hattie B's Hot Chicken, Arnold's Country Kitchen, and Edley's Bar-B-Que are personal faves.
But what really gets my heart racing is Nashville's LGBTQ+ community. I've had the pleasure of attending Pride events, witnessing the outpouring of love and support for our queer brothers and sisters. The city may not be as flashy as some of its southern counterparts, but it's got a certain je ne sais quoi – a deep-down warmth that makes you feel like you're home.
Reportedly, Nashville has one of the highest concentrations of LGBTQ+ individuals in the country. I'm told that's thanks to the city's accepting atmosphere and robust community infrastructure. Who knows? Maybe it's the influence of the country music scene (hello, Dolly Parton!), but there's something special about this place.
Of course, no discussion of Nashville would be complete without mentioning its iconic country music scene. The Ryman Auditorium is a hallowed ground for music lovers – even if you're not a huge fan of twangy tunes, the energy in that room is palpable. And don't even get me started on the Bluebird Cafe: intimate songwriting sessions with some of the best singer-songwriters out there? Yes, please!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Ryan, this all sounds very... country." And you're right – it is! But hear me out: Nashville's not just about cowboy boots and line dancing (although, let's be real, those things are fun too). There's a rich cultural heritage here that's waiting to be explored. From the Frist Art Museum to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, there's no shortage of culture and history to soak up.
As I wrap up this Nashville love letter, I'm reminded of why I fell head over heels in the first place: it's the people. The community. The sense of belonging that permeates every corner of this city. So if you're looking for a place to call home – or just want to experience some good ol' fashioned Southern hospitality – look no further than Music City, baby!
